10fts are not used for shipping. If they are new, they usually come over from China in ‘sets’ with smaller new containers inside, they are therefore rarely filled with cargo – these kinds of containers would still have weight ratings and ISO corner castings to the top and bottom of the units, however, they can be quite difficult to come by. It is as likely, if not more likely, that a new 10ft container would have started it’s life as a 20ft or 40ft ISO container. It would then be cut down and new doors / ends put onto the container to make a 10ft.

New containers are sometimes known as ‘one-way’ or ‘once shipped’ containers.

It is unusual to come across used 10ft ‘original’ containers, more often, they would be cut down from larger 20ft and 40ft containers. As part of this process, they are fitted with fabricated ‘flat panel’ doors and new ends (or both!). They are then fitted with a security lockbox and re-painted prior to despatch. You could go on to say, the donor 20ft or 40ft container would have been owned for a number of years by a shipping line

10ft containers can also come as high cube containers. 10fts are built specially and have an extra 1ft in height, therefore, as oppose to the usual 8ft 6ins external height of a standard shipping container, these units are 9ft 6ins externally. 

Do you have plenty of space? 10ft containers often cost as much, if not a little more, than 20ft containers. Therefore, if space is not an issue, we strongly recommend purchasing a 20ft container which represents much better value for money, even the haulage price would be the same for double the unit!
