What is a Container Prefix?
A container prefix is a unique identifier used in the shipping and logistics industry to track and manage shipping containers. It is typically a combination of letters and numbers found at the beginning of a container’s identification code. This prefix, along with the serial number, helps distinguish one container from another and allows for efficient tracking throughout its journey across various ports, ships, and trucks. The container prefix follows the ISO 6346 international standard, which ensures uniformity across the shipping industry.
The prefix identifies the company that owns or operates the container. For example, 3J Containers now have “JJJU” (do you get it? It starts with three Js!) and all prefixes end with the letter ‘U’. Let’s have a look at one of our new blue container numbers, which has the identification code JJJU2200190:
- JJJU: The container prefix, indicating that it is owned by us
- 220019: The unique serial number of the container. For our particular fleet, the 22 also tells us this is a blue container, if it was 20, it would be green.
- 0: The check digit used to validate the container number
