The Brief
A long-standing self-storage customer approached 3J Services looking for a way to increase the capacity of their existing storage facility. Having already invested in numerous 20ft new shipping containers, they wanted to maximise their site without the expense and disruption of relocating or acquiring additional land.
The Challenge
The storage site had reached its ground-level capacity, yet demand for secure storage units continued to grow from both domestic and commercial customers. With no available space to expand outwards, the customer needed an innovative solution that would increase the number of rentable storage units while making full use of their existing footprint.
Our Solution
Using standard 20ft new containers, we carried out a series of structural modifications to create an elevated storage walkway. A 4ft aperture was cut centrally into each 20ft side panel, leaving two 8ft sections. Roller shutters were then installed on both sides, forming a protected walkway with an 8ft storage unit positioned to the left and right. Each unit was colour‑matched internally and externally for a cohesive, professional finish. To complete the installation, we supplied a staircase and small access platform leading up to the new elevated level.
The Result
The completed project delivered eight modified 20ft topper containers, creating a total of sixteen secure 8ft self-storage units. By building upwards rather than outwards, the customer significantly increased their storage capacity without requiring any additional land, enabling them to meet growing customer demand while making the most of their existing site. This bespoke container topper solution provided a practical, cost-effective and scalable way to expand the facility, helping the customer maximise both their available space and their potential rental income.
